Can I Use Essential Oils For Skin?

Essential oils have been used for centuries and it’s easy to see why with their multitude of benefits for your skin.

You can definitely use essential oils for skin. In fact, single oils and essential oil blends were used topically for centuries as a form of medicine.[3] Of course, you should always make sure you aren’t allergic to the plant of origin before using the oil on yourself.

To prevent any sensitivities, always dilute pure oils with a carrier oil or carrier product. Examples of carrier oils include hemp oil, avocado oil, rosehip seed oil, and coconut oil (not to be confused with coconut essential oil, which is a more potent version). Carrier products can be something like lotion, shampoo, or jellies. A common ratio to keep in mind for diluting essential oils for skin is 2 percent dilution (e.g. 12 drops of essential oil per 30 ml of carrier oil).

Important: Using essential oils topically on children should be done with caution because their skin absorbs at a much faster rate than adults. Diluting essential oils for children should be done with a higher concentration of carrier oil or product and less of the actual essential oil. One percent (or even less) dilution rate is best for children.
